Go With Experience and Safety

Newborn photography is a specialized field within the world of portrait photography. It focuses on capturing the innocence, fragility, and pure beauty of infants in their first few weeks of life. These images serve as a timeless record of a baby's earliest moments, allowing parents to relive and share those memories for years to come. You ALWAYS want to make sure that your photographer is skilled in SAFE newborn posing and knows how to determine if a baby is not right for a certain pose or needs to moved to be more comfortable. Newborn photography is not for those "just starting out" or "learning" their camera. Invest in a skilled and trained newborn photographer both for your baby's safety and for the outcome of your images.

Preparing for a Newborn Photo Shoot

Timing is Crucial: The best time for a newborn photo shoot is within the first three weeks of the baby's life. During this period, they are more likely to sleep deeply and curl up into those adorable, womb-like positions. Having a sleepy baby allows for increased safety and efficiency of the session.

Safety First

Safety is paramount in newborn photography. I will always ensure a comfortable and safe environment for the baby. I use only props and poses that are safe for a newborn. If the situation calls for it, I keep a parent nearby to provide support. I have been trained in newborn safe handling techniques and I also have a Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy so I have advance knowledge of safe newborn posing.

Setting the Scene

I will create a peaceful and welcoming backdrop for your photo shoot including a warm room and white noise. Soft blankets, wraps, and natural lighting can enhance the charm of the lifestyle portion of your session. Lifestyle photography can showcase the natural interactions between the baby and their parents or siblings, creating authentic and heartwarming images. Lifestyle images can be either in your home or in the lifestyle area of my studio.

For the posed section of the session I will use studio lighting in order to be in control of the amount of light and what shadows it creates. I will create sets with backdrops and props for the posed section and you are always welcome to help me create these sets to your style and we will discuss color option and props prior to your session date.

Patience and Flexibility

Babies are unpredictable, and they don't always follow a set schedule. Be prepared to wait for those perfect moments and to adapt to the baby's mood and needs. We may need to do a feeing (or two or three) to keep the baby full and comfortable during the session. Posed newborn sessions run anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on the participation of siblings (or family pets) and the temperament of the baby. I always give babies enough time to get sleepy and comfortable and never try to rush them into any poses.

Preserving the Memories

After the photo shoot, the real magic happens in the editing room. Skilled post-processing can enhance the softness, color, and mood of the images, creating truly enchanting photographs. I will spend hours on your gallery making every image gorgeous and getting rid of any minor distractions. For example newborns have particularly flakey and blotchy skin. I will clean up baby's complexion but never make it look "fake". Once your final gallery is completed, you will have the option to purchase wall art, cards, and beautiful albums.
